When you apply for a visa to Spain, you will find that there are 2 types of applications. If you want to traveling to Spain for work, you will need to apply for a different type of visa.
Citizens of visa-free countries such as the US, Canada and Australia can travel to Spain without applying for a short-stay visa. When applying for a short-term visa, travel health insurance must cover not only the entire territory of Spain, but also all other Schengen member states. EU citizens whose government has not signed a visa waiver agreement must apply for an entry visa to travel to Spain and/or other Schengen countries. EU citizens wishing to visit Spain can travel with an ID card without visa restrictions.
Citizens of other countries will need a visa to visit, live and study in Spain. Long stays in Spain require a national visa unless you are a citizen of a country outside the EU/EEA or Switzerland. Another requirement for applying for a visa to Spain is to provide proof to the Spanish authorities of where you will be staying during your stay in Spain. During your visa appointment, the Spanish authorities will ask you to present a document indicating where you will be staying in Spain for the duration of your trip.

If you are planning to apply for a visa to Spain, whether for a short or long stay, the best thing you can do at the beginning is to find out what documents you need. You can apply at your home consulate, but applying in Spain on a tourist visa gives you more benefits. To avoid delays in issuing a short stay Spanish visa, you should apply as soon as possible, but not earlier than three months before you travel to Spain. All visitors intending to stay in Spain for more than 3 months will need to apply for a long stay visa.

US citizens holding a US passport with a validity of at least 3 months from the expected date of return from Spain are not required to obtain a visa for tourist or business purposes, or for transit through the airport for stays of up to 90 days. If you are married to a Spanish passport holder and wish to travel to Spain for a short visit, you must have a Spanish citizen spouse visa in order to enter Spain.
You have been able to apply for a Spanish Schengen visa since 1995, when Spain, as a member of the European Union, also became a member of the Schengen Area. Since Spain is a member of the Schengen area, Spain applies the Schengen visa code to all travelers staying in the country for a short period of time.
